Neurostimulation (Nerve stimulation)
Neurostimulation or nerve stimulation can be delivered from outside or inside the body. Nerve stimulation from outside the body is called TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation). TENS uses electrodes, which are applied directly to the skin next to the painful area of the body. The electrodes are connected to a battery powered neurostimulation device which is usually worn around the waist. Neurostimulation may also be delivered inside the body (internal nerve stimulation) by a battery powered device and electrodes placed inside the body during an operation. TENS is often tried first but when it is not sufficient to cope with the pain the potentially more effective internal nerve stimulation is a possible option.
